My roommate and I went on Atkins Diet. We have both been significantly overweight our entire lives.
Knowing the health risks that are associated with obesity as one gets older, we thought we'd try Atkins. I had no idea how well it actually worked, but it was popular and it seemed to be based on medical research.
It seemed like everywhere you turned you were hearing about the Atkins diet.
I tried it for about a month and then gave up. I found that when eating a very low-carb diet I began to crave carb-heavy foods.
The diet itself seems scientifically sound but it was very hard to stick to because of the cravings.
When the snack cart came around or there were doughnuts in the break room at work I found myself more often than not having a sugary high-carb item. I was actually eating more empty calorie type snacks rather than fewer.
I also found that the Atkins brand food products were just enough more expensive than other foods that I resisted buying them. Possibly this was a larger marketplace problem since I've noticed that they are not seen as often on the shelves, and some of them have been on clearance.
They always say that the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to make a lifestyle change. It became clear to me that I would not be able to maintain Atkins as a way of eating for the rest of my life.
