I have been on so many diets over my life-long battle with fat. By now at the age of 46 there have been so many diet attempts I cannot put a number to all of them.
Soup diet, low calorie diet, low carb diet. Teachers, friends and family members all thought they knew the best way for me to lose weight.
Here are a couple of my experiences, one that was the worst and one that seemed to work well, until my own shortcomings put me in the failure column again.
The first was the Slim Fast liquid diet. Basically I felt like, "How could I fail at this?" I was in my early 20's and I felt like I would be guaranteed to drop the pounds quickly.
But I was not prepared to be so emotional at not being able to eat food. I was alternately mad and sad. Angry at not getting to eat and sad to the point of crying.
Needless to say, Slim Fast did NOT last long.
A second attempt came later when I was around 28. My mom convinced me to join Weight Watchers. I was somewhat nervous at weighing in front of everyone, but found a certain amount of success with a plan that was balanced.
If I remember correctly I lost around 40 pounds. And with my success came a confidence that lead me to believe that I did not need to attend WW regularly, and eventually I quit attending all together.
And without the group support and weigh ins to keep me honest, I fell back to my old ways and regained my weight.
