A while ago, when the Atkin's Diet was huge and constantly in the news, my family and I decided to try it. We were on it for about 4-5 months.
The thing about this diet is you are very restricted to what you can eat. It starts you out eating very little carbs.
The only things we were "allowed" to eat during the first two weeks was salad, eggs and anything else very, very low in carbs. This was difficult for me as I didn't eat eggs at the time so I was basically eating salad constantly.
As time went on we were allowed more carbs, but it was still very limited. We rarely went to restaurants anymore.
Overall though, my dad and I lost a noticeable amount of weight. I went down four pants sizes and my dad lost a bit of his gut. It didn't work as well for my mom and sister however.
This diet was very difficult to stick to. Having my family members doing it with me though was probably the only reason I got through it. Sometimes I think about going on it again, but with all I've learned, eating only salad for two weeks is not healthy.
Also, I believe to effectively lose weight and keep it off, you need to be aware of all nutritional values, not just carbs. Atkins has you eat a high fat, low carb diet. In my opinion, I think there should be a balance.
That being said, I don't think I would recommend this diet. There's too much you can't eat and not enough you can.
