Here it is, the one thing that will be the most help to you: Find out what you are doing that is keeping you from losing weight.
That might sound too obvious.
But it's true. Most people that need to lose weight don't really know what is keeping them overweight.
You've heard it and you've probably said it yourself, some version of: "Why am I so fat? Why can't I lose weight? Why don't diets work for me? Why doesn't exercise work?"
Is there a simple answer that fits everyone? No there isn't.
People are different, with different metabolism and genetic makeup. With different likes and dislikes. Activity levels. Physical capabilities.
Can you prescribe the same diet and activity for a 20-year-old man who gained weight in his first year at college that you would for a middle aged woman with bad knees and pain in her hips?
So while there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, there is an answer for you, and you can find what it is.
A while back I was working on a book, Dr. Dan's Super Weight Loss Plan.
I had researched weight loss for 20 years. I was treating patients who were overweight. I had lost weight myself using what I had found.
I had a simple approach. Find those things that have been shown to work, and then organize them in easy-to-follow steps.
Not bodybuilding tips. Or fad diets. Just a simple program, based on the person's abilities and likes and dislikes.
Because there is no use recommending something that you can't do or won't do.
Will it get you in better shape? Sure. Live longer and healthier? Of course. Those things always go along with reaching your goal weight.
While I was working on the book I went to a seminar for writers. It was actually called "How To Be A Million Dollar Author." The idea was to show writer's how to reach a bigger audience.
Did I go to make a million dollars? No. I went to find out how to reach more people and help them lose weight.
You know what they told me at the meeting? They said that people don't want to help themselves.
They talked about the story of the fisherman: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
You know what they said about that? They said, "People don't want to learn how to fish. They don't even want to be given a fish."
"They want you to catch the fish, fillet the fish, cook it, and feed it to them."
They also said that I shouldn't tell people what they need to know. They said to tell them what they want to hear.
See that? Don't tell them what they need to know. Tell them what they want to hear. Even if it's wrong.
That's how you make a million dollars as an author. And don't worry about what happens to the person later. A little bit cold, don't you think?
Do you know what? That's where all the fad diets come from.
That's where all the gimmicks come from.
That's where all the phony supplements come from.
And so it follows that that is where a lot of the pain, heartache, failure, fellings of loss, worry and despair come from.
It comes from people who are telling you what you want to hear rather than what will actually work for you.
But it also comes from you listening to it. And you following it, even though it doesn't work. Failing at it. And then accepting the next false promise and doing the same thing all over again.
In some ways the "easy way" is always easy to sell. Who wouldn't want to lose 12 pounds in one weekend? Who wouldn't want to lose 18 inches with a body wrap?
But why would you just keep beating your head against a wall in a hopeless effort to find the quick fix? When it is never going to happen?
Gimmicks don't work. They never do. You won't lose the weight that way.
You'll end up worse off than you are now. And you'll probably lose all hope and you might live your whole life overweight and unhappy about it.
So, there isn't a single simple answer that fits everyone.
But there are basic principles. And you can use those principles, once you understand them, in a program that works just for you.
A workable plan should have these elements:
Now, where do you find this information? You should be able to find everything you need on this site. There is a lot of information, over 300 pages in 20 or so categories. You'll find recommendations for diets that have been shown to work and lots of tips and advice based on experience, research evidence and feedback from those who used it successfully to lose weight.
But the best single source is a book that I wrote, Dr. Dan's Super Weight Loss Plan. It is a step-by-step guide to help you lose weight and keep it off.
Your next step is to get your copy of the book.It has everything you need to get to your goal weight and stay there.
