It is a way of quickly figuring out if you are overweight or not just by using your height and weight.
If you are extremely muscular it might not be too accurate, but for someone that doesn't exercise much and is overweight it works very well.
The BMI calculator makes it easy for you. You don't need to do any math -- you just plug in the numbers.
Why is calculating the BMI so popular? It's because it is easy to do and it is reproducible. All you need to know is how tall you are and how much you weigh.
As you can see below, you want your BMI to be under 25. If your BMI is over 25 you are overweight.
Over 30 and you are obese. What is obese? It means that you not just overweight, but are very overweight, and that there is a high likelihood that your weight will affect your health.
Normal | Overweight | Obese |
---|---|---|
18.5-25 | 25-30 | over 30 |
Some references list "clinically obese" when you get heavier, and then "morbidly obese" when you get really, really heavy. But it is just more of the same, isn't it?
The point is, the heavier you are, the worse off you are, and the more your health and happiness is going to suffer.
Keep track of your BMI as you shed those pounds. Shoot for 25 or less, and you will have a body you can be proud of!
