Atkins Diet is not for everyone, but it works for me.
I struggled with my weight from my childhood through my early twenties. Finally, I lost almost 50 pounds at age 25 by virtually starving myself (something I would NOT recommend to anyone!)
I managed to keep it off with a combination of counting calories like crazy, and was mostly successful until I hit my forties.
But then counting calories didn't work. Low fat diets didn't work.
I put on about 15 pounds I couldn't get rid of. Just about that time, the South Beach Diet came along, but I couldn't get my head around the suggested meals.
I remembered my father's one (partially) successful diet was Atkins, so I picked up a copy of the book, and I was hooked.
It was easy to find foods I could eat and liked, both at home and in a restaurant. Even snack foods were easy to find, because of the popularity of Atkins and the South Beach Diet.
I dropped the 15 extra pounds in about 2 months--and I was NEVER hungry.
But I also remembered how quickly my father gained back his weight when he returned to his high carb ways, and I also saw how many of my friends gained back their weight after stopping Atkins or the South Beach Diet.
I have stayed on a modified version of Atkins for the past five years, reverting to the intro stage if I pick up a couple of pounds.
I do miss bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, and if I "carb load," those are the things I go for, but for me, this is the way to eat!
It's harder now to find snacks and special low carb foods like bread and waffles, but I manage, and I never feel hungry.
P.S. My cholesterol levels and blood pressure are exactly where they should be without medication.
